This rocker arm shaft is a part of the engine which controls the valve timing, actuating the opening and closing of valves to allow air in and out of cylinders. It connects to a linkage rod that is attached to a rocker arm, which itself connects to the camshaft. When the camshaft turns it causes the rocker arm to push down on one end of the pushrod, which lifts up on the opposite side. This lifts up one end of the valve and allows air into or out of cylinder.
