How to Remove a Hansgrohe Faucet Aerator (Without Special Tools)

Aerators are fittings at the end of the faucet spout, from which water flows out. Its main purpose is to add air into the water as it flows to reduce the solid stream of water and to reduce water wastage.

Some of the Hansgrohe aerators can be removed by hand and others may require special tools. The most common reason for removing the aerator is usually low water pressure.

Here is a guide on how to remove and clean the Hansgrohe faucet aerator.

Tools

Channel type pair of pliers

Masking tape/ Rag

Hair dryer (if needed)

Small but still brush

Penetrating oil

Lime-dissolving solution (if needed)

Method 1: Attempt to remove by hand

Use your hand and try to loosen the aerator from the faucet spout. If the aerator was screwed on by hand, then the most appropriate way to remove it would be by hand as well. To get a good grip, dry off both the faucet and your hands.

Method 2: Use a pair of pliers

If you are unable to remove the aerator by hand, use a pair of pliers. Wrap a rag or masking tape around the Hansgrohe aerator to avoid scratching the metal surface while gripping it with the pliers. The best recommendation would be to use the channel-type pair of pliers.

Strictly using the jaw of the pliers, grip the aerator and turn it counterclockwise to unscrew it from the faucet spout. Be careful while gripping the aerator and not grip the faucet spout as well. Move the pliers about a quarter of a turn around the aerator if the first attempt to unscrew it fails. Try to loosen the aerator from the current position.

The material that makes the aerator is soft and can easily bend—do not grip the aerator too tightly. This makes the removal process harder since too soft of a grip may not do the job.

Method 3: Heat the aerator

Use a hairdryer to expand the aerator’s metal and then loosen it with a pair of pliers if method 2 fails to work. A great substitute for the hairdryer would be a lit matchstick. You can be able to loosen the metal using this procedure as well by holding the lit match near it. The aerator is near some plastic parts or rubber washers as well, which implies that you should be careful when using any form of heat so that you do not melt and destroy any of these parts.

Method 4: Apply penetrating oil

You can use WD-40 or any similar product to spray onto the threads if the heating method fails. Before you try to unfasten it with the pliers again, let it sit for a few minutes. The oil will most definitely make the metals slippery so it is recommended that you wipe them off the aerator’s surface.

How to Clean the Hansgrohe Aerator

After removing the aerator, separate the parts and make note of how they are supposed to be arranged, so you can put them back easily.

The dirt, grit and mineral deposits that are on the screen and other parts of the aerator assembly can be removed using a small stiff brush. For mineral build-up and stubborn stains, soak the aerator parts in a lime-dissolving solution overnight.

How to Replace the Hansgrohe Aerator

It would be much easier for you to buy a brand new aerator to replace the current one if the metal screen or any of its parts are damaged or rusted. There are a variety of aerator heads that are available in the market today, and they also include those for the faucets that have swivel spouts.

How to Reassemble the Hansgrohe Aerator

All the parts of the aerator should be put back in the same order that you remove them and then screw the aerator assembly back onto the faucet spout.

If there is a leak, use the channel-type pliers to tighten the aerator onto the faucet.

Advantages of the Hansgrohe Aerator

  1. The aerator adds air into the solid stream of water, preventing water from splashing since the water flows out uniformly.
  2. Aerators limit the flow of water through the process. Therefore it saves you a lot of water and money in the long run.
