The foot is attached to a pivot on the drive shaft, thus allowing it to rock forward and backwards and providing a range of movement for the tiller. This range of movement pushes down on the tines (which are mounted about halfway up the tiller frame) and lifts them up. The foot is disengaged from the pivot by a lever which attaches to the operator's handlebars. When not in use, this lever can be folded over to reduce initial set-up time, and when used to move the tiller one operator can operate it quite easily.
