This is a High Pressure Relief Assembly and it's also called a Relief Valve. Two of them are in your hot water heater. If an internal part breaks, hot water can explode from the tank. To safety the tank from damaging itself, this valve will relieve pressure when it reaches an unsafe level. The RHEEM "Protech" high pressure relief assemblies include an associated internal check valve for loading reliability and 24V remote reset capability too.

Protech pressure relief valves easily identify the device to be checked and serviced without wasting time, energy or water. The red triangular symbol indicates that the valve is set at a high pressure limit, up to 195 psi (roughly 14 bar). The red text and symbol on the valve housing also alert technicians to a critical condition. Depending on code requirements, it also can be set for an intermediate pressure limit of 135 psi or a low limit of 110 psi (roughly 8 bar).
