The anvil is a forging surface usually made from hard steel or iron. Its primary function is to hold and support the workpiece while it is being forged, such as when metal is being shaped by hammering, cutting, bending, etc. The end of the anvil with the horn or leg, called the heel, is used as a locking device, and in conjunction with the pritchel hole can also be used as a swage block. The flat face of the anvil end is used for stretching, flattening, or folding metals by striking blows at right angles to the surface.

The IR anvil, made of forged steel, is more rigid and has a higher resistance to shock than other types of anvils. The head is polished smooth and bores out to relieve minor forging dents. The hardy hole is edge ground to 0.3680" (9.15mm) for maximum accessibility during white hot work operations. Forged steel with two hardened jaws.
