Toilet seats, like every other thing, get worn out or stained, and sometimes they break. These are some of the reasons why you may need to remove the current toilet seat and install a brand new one. The following are the steps that will guide you on the removal and the installation process for the American Standard toilet seat.
Requirements:
- A flathead screwdriver
- Lubricating oil
- A tape measure
- A pair of pliers
- A wrench
- A toilet seat kit
How Do You Remove The Current Toilet Seat?
Unfasten the bolt caps and bolts
Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the bolt caps and the bolts. If in place of bolts there are nuts, unscrew them with a wrench.
Lubricate the surfaces.
Lubrication makes it easier to remove the bolts since it reduces the amount of friction. To do this, use lubrication oil. To begin this process, put the oil directly on the bolts/nuts and let it sit there for a few minutes.
Clean the area.
The idea is to work on a clean canvas. Therefore you are required to clean the surface area before you begin to install the new toilet seat.
How Do You Install The New Toilet Seat?
Now that you have removed the old toilet seat, it is time you install the new one. The following are your guiding steps:
Hinge Alignment
Place the new seat directly on the bowl. Pre-attach the hinges in advance in place of the old ones in the same alignment.
Bolt Insertion
Strictly with the head sticking up, place the bolts onto the hinges. Ensure that the nut goes on top of the bolt and tightens with the wrench.
Bolt Caps Attachment.
Secure the already installed and tightened bolts with the bolt caps.
American Standard Soft Close Toilet Seat Repair
An American standard soft close toilet seat can have a few issues here and there same as the ordinary non-soft close ones. The soft close hinges are more often than not the very reason why your toilet seat is no longer a soft-closing one as it was designed to be.
Look for the metal hinges
To do this, open your toilet seat and look for the metal hinges that are usually seated vertically positioned on vertical pegs. These pegs are attached at the back of the toilet bowl, which the hinges on the toilet seat slide onto.
Lift the toilet seat
Leave the soft close seat in a fully open position by lifting the toilet seat up from the hinges in an upright position. Holding the toilet seat up steadily, lift it straight from the metal pegs.
Set the toilet seat upside down
With the toilet seat facing upside down, and on a flat surface, ensure that the metal hinges are exposed.
Remove the dampers
Pull out the dampers (cylindrical in shape) off of both sides of the back of the toilet seat. You can use your fingers to pull them all the way out from the holes they are in. Dampers are essentially the mechanisms that control the speed at which the seat closes.
Rotate the dampers
Make the rotations towards the back of the seat to make it close more easily. Aligning the dampers with holes with which they are supposed to slide into. This will enable the seat’s hinges to slow down which makes it close more softly and quietly which is the main aim of repairing the American Standard Soft Closing Toilet Seat.
Return the hinge dampers
Push back the hinge dampers the hinge assembly on one side. Do this for both sides. Double-check to make sure that you are putting them both in the right position on the sides of the seat.
Put the toilet seatback
With the toilet holes in alignment with the seat’s hinges, lower the seat onto the toilet. Then proceed to set the seat back on the hinge pegs in an upright position.
Note, however, you may need to adjust the soft-close hinges only if the soft-close seat is not closing at the right speed.
