Toto Toilet Repairs, Leaks, Fixes, and More

Like many things, Toto toilets need repairs from time to time. Parts wear out over time, things leak, and you are forced to replace some parts.

This article outlines the various problems (like leaks) and the fixes that can be DIYed, or if you throw in the towel, might be done by professional plumbers to repair your Toto toile.

Types of Toto Toilet Leaks And How You Can Fix Them

  1. At the water supply valve.

You can fix this by tightening the screw behind the valve. Make sure not to damage the water supply pipe. Re-check the supply line connection to the supply valve to make sure it is in the correct position. If there is any form of damage to the supply line. Be sure to replace it with a new one.

  2. At the Toto toilet tank.

Focus on the point at which the supply line enters the toilet tank. Tighten the supply line connection. At the same time, ensure that the fill valve assembly is properly secured at the bottom of the tank. If the supply line is damaged, dispose of it.

  3. At the Toto Toilet bowl.

Tighten the bolts that connect the tank to the bowl and make sure they are secure. If the bolts are tight but the toilet still leaks, replace the bolts with the new ones. Both on the tank and at the toilet base. Also, check for cracks on the tank since they may as well be the reason for the toilet leak and replace the Toto toilet bowl then.

  4. Where the toilet meets the floor.

First of all, make sure the toilet is in the correct position and check the mounting bolts as well, to ensure they are secure. If the bolts are not the issue, then you will have to uninstall the entire toilet and fix a whole new one. Refer to “how to install a Toto toilet”.Also, if there are cracks at the base of the toilet, you will have to replace the unit.

  5. From either side of the tank.

How To Fix Your Toto Toilet If It Does Not Stop Leaking

Step 1. Check the fill tube.

You first need to identify a small flexible tube that runs all the way from the fill valve to the toilet overflow tube and fill it. Push the tube firmly into the valve and ensure that it is sending water into the toilet overflow tube. Flush and check to make sure that the water is going down the toilet overflow tube.

Step 2. Adjust the fill height by checking the float.

A float is an entity that controls the water level in the tank. If the float is set too low will produce a weak flush while one that is set too high causes water to spill into the toilet overflow tube which in turn causes your toilet to flush.

To stop your Toto toilet from running, identify the level mark on the inside of the tank and mark it so that you can notice it easily. And then keep adjusting the float until the water shuts off at the appropriate level.

Step 3: Adjust the flush handle and the flapper chain.

Make sure that the flapper chain is not too short otherwise it will not allow the flapper to close and then water will leak into the bowl. Note also that a long chain is just as bad. Because, if the chain is too long the flapper will not open wide enough to stay open for the whole flush.

To know that the chain is the right size, be sure to leave a slight bit of slack when the flapper is closed and cut off the excess part.

Step 4: Replace the flapper

You may have completed the above steps but your Toto toilet is still running. The reason is that the flapper may be worn out. Install the new flapper and make sure it opens and closes freely and test it immediately. Ensure that the seal is tight and your toilet should stop running at this point.

Fill Valve Replacement

A fill valve is a mechanism that is in charge of filling the toilet tank with water. It is also known as the refill valve. Here is you replace your fill valve:

  1. Remove the old toilet fill valve.

Make sure to shut off the water supply before you remove the old fill valve. Use a pair of pliers or an adjustable wrench to detach the water supply tube from the fill valve tailpiece. At the bottom surface of the tank, there is a flange that is attached to the fill valve by a mounting nut. Remove the nut.

  2. The new fill valve.

With the tail of the fill valve being slightly taller than the top of the overflow tube, slide the rubber washer onto the bottom flange on the fill valve tailpiece and screw it.

  3. Installation of the new fill valve

Insert the tailpiece of the fill valve through an opening at the bottom of the toilet tank. Make sure that the valve is in a position such that its nipple is facing the overflow in the tube inside the tank. Thread a nut onto the tailpiece from the bottom of the toilet. Tighten the nut using a pair of pliers but not too much. Reconnect the fill valve back to the earlier detached water supply tube.

Toilet fill valve adjustment

Find the nipple at the top of the fill valve and attach one end of the Toto fill valve and on the other end, attach the plastic/metal adapter and put a clip at the top of the overflow tube.

Turn on the water supply and let the Toto toilet tank fill with water as you inspect the fittings at the bottom of the tailpiece as you inspect for any leaks as well.

Toto toilet runs intermittently. How do you fix that?

When a toilet runs intermittently, it means that the flapper is faulty. The mechanism that opens the toilet while flushing is what is referred to as a flapper.

The following are the steps that are going to help you fix that:

  1. At the end of the water supply hose is where the water supply valve is. Turn off the water supply to the toilet tank.
  2. Flush the toilet and hold the lid to the tank up, to make sure the tank is completely drained.
  3. Using a pair of pliers, unlatch the flapper chain from the clip on the backside of the flush lever.
  4. Remove the flapper from the toilet tank and dispose of it.
  5. Using another flapper, place it over the toilet tank to drain, right side up.
  6. Press down the flapper inside the tank and ensure it is in proper positioning. Keep ensuring that the flapper is in the correct position by holding the chain up to the hole in the backside of the flush lever until the chain is tight. Attach the clip to the link closest to the hole.
  7. While attaching the clip to the hole in the backside of the flush lever, turn on the water supply valve and allow the water to fill the Toto toilet tank. Proceed to flush the toilet. It should be fine at this point.

Toto Toilet Troubleshooting

The toilet is overflowing

The first thing is to prevent as much damage as you possibly can by opening the tank and pushing down the flapper to prevent water from filling the bowl. Shut off the water supply to avoid flooding.By doing this, your problem has been troubleshot. You can proceed to check for the plumbing problems.

The toilet is not flushing

  • I could have a broken pull chain. This is the mechanism that connects the flapper to the toilet’s handle.
  • The handle may be loose which you can tighten using a wrench or it may be broken in which case you need to replace it immediately otherwise your toilet will not flush at all.
  • Your toilet’s float may be broken. This is the mechanism that regulates how high or how low the water levels in the toilet tank. If the float is broken then you definitely need to replace it with a completely new one.
  • The fill valve may be faulty. If water does not move properly through the valve, clean it thoroughly or replace it.
