This prevents the belt from slipping out of the pulley groove under high acceleration loads. This is accomplished by shifting the inner belt slightly as it wears down. The belt also has a longer life due to increased slider/pulley contact area, and an environmentally friendly rubber compound that resists ozone cracking.
