The camshaft (C) is a precision mechanical device that supports the rocker arms and contacts the valves to open them. The camshaft contains lobes, which are notched into a circle. The lobes provide the valve timing for opening and closing the valves. The position of each lobe determines when, during the engine's operation cycle, that particular valve opens and closes. Tappet blocks are used to secure the lifters to the camshaft so they can push up on their respective pushrods and operate their respective valves.
