The American Standard touchless toilets use a no-touch mechanism that enables you to flush the toilet without touching any parts of it.

Features of the American Standard Touchless Toilet Flush Technology

1. Germ-free, no-touch flush
These high-performance toilets have been engineered with a germ-free feature. They also have a no-touch flush.

2. Long-lasting battery

These toilets are powered by 4AA which last up to two years, and the batteries come with the toilet during purchase. When it is time to replace the batteries, the sensor blinks red as an indicator every time the toilet is flushed.

3. Reliability

The ActiVate Touchless Flush Technology in the American Standard toilets ensures that the toilet operates at its optimum. To flush the toilet, simply wave your hands about two inches away from the sensor.

4. Manual flush option

There is usually a backup manual flush option for these toilets that is convenient and quick to access. The manual flush is located at the sensor.

5. Power off mode

You can easily clean the toilet by deactivating the sensor. It is usually powered off, to avoid any accidental and unwanted flushing during cleaning. The power-off button is usually located at the sensor.

Possible Problems with the American Standard Touchless Toilet

Flushing Problems

  • No flush or delayed flush, caused by no batteries or dead batteries.
  • Water levels are too low or too high.
  • A delayed flush may be caused by the air hose not being correctly connected.
  • The sensor is broken.
  • The toilet is clogged or blocked by waste.
  • There may be lockout mode—the flush command, during a flush cycle, is initiated.
  • The hand swipe (touchless) is way too fast for the sensor to register.
  • The hand swipe (touchless) may not be swiped at the exact point where the sensor is located.
  • The water supply line is blocked.
  • The water control may be blocked by debris or sand, causing the toilet to fail to flush.
  • The toilet may not fully flush because the refill tube may be incorrectly installed inside the overflow tube.
  • The manual flush button may not be fully pressed during flushing causing the toilet to not fully flush.
  • There may be unintended activation of the sensor by random motion and object waving. The auto flash is an automatic mechanism that can cause the toilet to flush without manual activation.

Leaking Problem
Toilet leakage may be a result of water levels being way too high. There may also be debris or dirt that may be sealing the surface preventing water from draining as it should.

The shank nut may also be too loose, which allows the water to leak from the toilet.

While refilling the water in the tank, the water levels may be too high causing the toilet to leak.

There could be a poor connection of the supply line as well.

Manual Button Problem

The touchless mode may be activated which may deactivate the manual flushing system and turn it off. Not pressing the manual button with enough pressure will cause the button to fail, will automatically fail if there is no water in the tank. The air hose may be incorrectly connected or not connected at all which may cause the manual button to fail. The water levels may be too low or too high in the tank, making the manual button not work as effectively as it should.

Sensor/LED Light/Battery Problems

The LED flashes red during flushing. The battery of the touchless toilet may flash red when the remaining power of the battery is low.

LED red light flashes constantly. The light may be flashing on and off constantly if the sensor is turned off.

The blue LED flashes. The system is usually executing a flush command when the blue LED flashes.

The LED flashes red and blue. After the batteries have been inserted and connected, the system automatically executes an initial boot-up phase which is indicated by the red and blue flashing of the LED.

Ways to Troubleshoot the American Standard Touchless Toilet

If the toilet fails to flush, replace the alkaline 4AA batteries with new ones. Fill the tank with water to a level that is indicated at the back of the toilet tank.

The valve should be connected correctly to the activation unit.

For the manual button to work, you can easily activate it by simply deactivating the sensor. To use the manual button, remove the battery connector from the sensor and use the manual button instead.

Always use a slow swipe of your hand on the sensor if it fails to detect previous touchless motion.

If the supply valve is shut off, simply open it to let the water fill the toilet tank. Inspect the washers and the gaskets to make sure that there is no blockage to the supply line and reassemble them.

Always make sure that the water levels are low enough and high enough as indicated by the label on the water tank to avoid any leakage.

If the leakage is caused by a build-up of debris on the sealing surface, you can always clean the surface to get rid of it.

Tighten the shank nut if it is loose to seal the water off and prevent further leaking.

  1. The refill tube should be directly connected to the overflow tube to prevent the toilet from flushing only partially. The water levels should also be as indicated on the toilet tank where the label is. Press the manual button in further for a full flush.
  2. Remove any items that are in the way of the sensor to prevent unintended flushing or accidental sensor activation. However, the automatic flush is always set to flush every 12 days which does not necessarily mean there is any problem with your toilet.
  3. If the manual button is not working, you can activate the automatic flush and initiate the touchless mechanism to flush the toilet. Alternatively, you can press the manual button further to activate the flush manually.
  4. If the battery power is low, replace the batteries with new ones. This is often indicated by the red LED flashing when a flush is initiated.
  5. If the red LED is constantly flashing, you can press the power icon for about 3 seconds to exit the OFF mode.
  6. The LED that flashes both blue and red are normal for the sensor to start up.
