The American Standard and Kohler toilets are leading toilet brands in the United States. They have a range of products that include sinks, bathroom and kitchen faucets, bathtubs, toilets and more. It is not easy to say which brand is better, however, we will outline their strengths and weaknesses, and discuss their features in this guide.
What should you look for in a toilet?
Here are some of the features that characterize the two toilets.
1. A one-piece or a two-piece
A one-piece toilet has the tank and the toilet bowl molded together into one single unit. Whereas the two-piece is characterized by the toilet tank and the bowl as two separate units. The concept of a one-piece toilet and a two-piece toilet does not affect the flushing performance of the toilets.
The two-piece toilets are a traditional product since they have been around for much longer. They are the most suitable for small bathroom spaces.
On the other hand, the one-piece toilets are much easier to clean because they have fewer hard-to-reach areas. However, the two-piece is cheaper than the one-piece.
2. Pressure assisted toilets vs. gravity flow toilets
Gravity flow toilets essentially use gravity to assist them in clearing the bowl during a flush. On the other hand, the pressure-assisted ones use a secondary tank that has additional air pressure to flush the waste down the drain. These pressure-assisted toilets clear more waste than the gravity flow toilets, which helps consume less water per flushing cycle.
3. Round or elongated design
The round-shaped toilets are much smaller than the elongated ones. However, the elongated toilet seats are more comfortable to use. The shape is more or less a matter of preference.
4. Water-saving capabilities
These toilets utilize only about 1.6GPF, which saves on a lot of water, compared to traditional toilets which use about 4GPF.
American Standard Toilet vs. Kohler Toilet
Their designs, ease of cleaning, installation process, maintenance, pricing and flushing systems are some of the factors found in this comparison:
1. Design and comfort
The Kohler toilets have a comfortable height. They also have elongated toilet bowls, which offer more comfort. On the other hand, the American Standard toilets offer both elongated and round toilet bowls.
However, the American Standard toilets do require a much larger space as compared to the Kohler ones which are best suited for small and compact bathroom spaces.
2. Flushing System
Although Kohler's flushing system is water-efficient, it is not as powerful as American Standard. The American Standard is so powerful that it can clear waste with just a single flush, as it has a dual flushing system. With the Kohler toilets, you would have to flush twice to get rid of the waste on the toilet bowl.
3. Noise
Although the American Standard toilet is powerful, it is quiet. The Kohler toilets produce more noise when flushing.
4. Cleaning
The finish on the Kohler toilets is easier to clean, compared to the American Standard Toilets. As mentioned earlier, the one-piece toilets are easier to clean than the two-piece ones.
5. Installation
The American Standard toilets and the Kohler toilets have met the US plumbing code requirements and can easily be installed by easily following the installation instructions provided.
6. Maintenance
In general, the American Standard toilets have fewer clogging and leakage problems. Kohler toilets are slightly more prone to these problems and may require more maintenance.
7. Pricing
The American Standard toilets are cheaper than Kohler toilets.
8. Warranty
American Standard offers a limited 2-year warranty on their toilets. Kohler, on the other hand, offers a one-year warranty on their products.
