Broan 100HL

Do you want to install the Broan 100HL range hood by yourself? Below is a detailed installation guide for you.

Warning:

To reduce the risk of electric shock, fire, or injury to persons, observe the following:

1. Use the device as per the manufacturer's guidelines. If you have any questions, get in touch with the manufacturer for help.

2. Before you clean or service the unit, ensure the power from the socket is switched off and lock the service panel disconnecting means.

3. A qualified technician should do all electrical wiring and installation work per the stated standards and applicable codes, such as fire-rated construction codes.

4. Ensure enough air for proper combustion and exhausting of gas through the chimney to avoid back-drafting. Take note of the manufacturer's heating equipment safety standards and rules, National Fire Protection Association, the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, and local code authorities.

5. As you drill or cut into the ceiling or wall, avoid interfering with electrical wiring and other hidden components.

6. Ducted fans should be vented to the outside.

7. If you install this unit over a tub or shower, it must be marked as suitable and connected to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protected branch circuit.

8. Do not place the switch at a point where it can be assessed from a shower or tub.

9. Do not use a dimmer switch to regulate the light of this device if you are using a fluorescent model.

10. This unit should be well-grounded.

Caution:

1. For general ventilation, avoid using the unit in exhausting explosive or hazardous materials and vapors.

2. This unit should only be used for ceiling installation up to a 12/12 pitch. Ductwork should point up. DO NOT FIX THIS UNIT IN A WALL.

3. Keep drywall spray, construction dust etc., of the power unit to avoid motor bearing damage and unbalanced and noisy impellers.

4. Read the description label on the unit for more information and requirements.

Install the Housing

For Existing Construction:

1. Select the installation for your fan in the ceiling. Use a minimum number of elbows and the shortest possible duct run for optimum performance.

2. In the attic, align the housing in the preferred location. Follow the outline of the housing on the ceiling.

3. Place the housing aside and drill the ceiling opening slightly more prominent than marked. Align the lower edge of the brackets a little higher than the bottom edge of the joists.

4. Position the housing in the opening. Align the mounting brackets with the joist and nail them through the keyhole on both ends. Tuck the bracket channels firmly around the mounting brackets to have a noise-free mount.

5. To rotate vertical housing position:

  • Loosen adjustment screws on the housing.
  • Move housing down or up until adjustment screws align with the mark showing you have finished the ceiling thickness. Tighten the screws firmly.

For New Construction:

1. Slip the adjustable fixing brackets into holes on the sides of the housing.

2. Select the installation for your fan in the ceiling. Use a minimum number of elbows and the shortest possible duct run for optimum performance.

3. Align mounting brackets with the joist. Put a mark on the keyhole slot on the mounting brackets.

4. Keep the housing aside and partially drive the nails into the joist.

5. Suspend housing from nails and fix the nails tight. Tuck the bracket channels firmly on the mounting brackets to realize a noise-free mount.

6. To rotate vertical housing position:

  • Loosen adjustment screws on the housing.
  • Move housing down or up until adjustment screws align with the mark showing you have finished the ceiling thickness. Tighten the screws firmly.

Installing the Ductwork

Caution: Use only metal ductwork to avoid fire risks.

Choose where the ductwork should penetrate between the hood and the outside. For efficient work, consider a short, straight duct.

NOTE: The duct connector comes with a counterbalanced damper flap. The flap opens approximately 1" when the duct connector is connected to the housing. This design allows the insulation to directly contact fan/light housing per Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards. The slightest backdraft can close the damper flat, blocking the air from entering the device or finished space.

1. Snap the duct/damper connector onto the housing. Ensure that tabs on the connector lock into slots in the housing. Fix a flush with the top of the housing at the top of the duct/damper connector.

NOTE: Ensure that the damper is well placed inside the duct connector. If not, squeeze the bottom and top of the connector to snap-flap back into its position.

2. Connect a 4" round duct to the duct/damper connector and extend it to the outside through a wall cap or roof. Confirm that the damper opens freely. Secure all duct connections using tape to make them safe and airtight.

Optional Liners

If you want to install your model in places with the power module above the cooktop by less than 30 inches, consider connecting the power module to a metal liner. This will provide for easy cleaning and safety of the cabinetry. Ensure to have a liner model that matches your cabinet width and style.

Prepare your Cabinet

The model should be mounted inside the cabinet at about 1 inch or less from the cabinet's rear wall. For optional liners, use the model as a template to drill a hole in the lower part of the cabinet.

  • The internal height of the cabinet should not be less than 16 inches.
  • The Broan 100HL range hood should be mounted at the center of the cooktop burners.
  • If the cabinet does not have a bottom, consider a different method under the INSTALLING POWER MODULE.

Installing Power Module

  • Push the latch down and twist the filter downward to remove the grease filter.
  • Place the filter in a safe place.
  • Pull out the damper and the parts bag from the power module.
  • Loosen the retaining screws on the electrical cover to remove it from the power module. Disconnect its hook from the power module housing by sliding the cover. Place the screws and the cover aside.
  • Connect the house power cable to the power module location through the service panel. Insert a 2-inch length of the cable in the cabinet and then connect the power cable to the power module allowing a strain relief of about 7/8 inches.
  • For ducted installation, insert the damper into the blower discharge through the top hole of the power module.
  • Secure the power module with two screws on each side.

Connecting the Wiring

Wire the device as per the diagram provided in the user manual. Connect the electrical as direct as possible to the device. Do not leave cables touching the sides or top of the device after the installation.

Connecting the Grille

1. Fix the light reflector into the front of the grille opening. Place the reflector/grille over the protruding screw and tighten using the provided acom nut. You can hand-tighten the acorn nut to 1/4 turn.

2. Fix the light bulb. Insert one tab on the light lens into the grille/reflector combination slot. Insert the other tab carefully into the remaining slot.

Use and Care

Warning: Turn off the electrical power supply to the unit before servicing or cleaning the unit.

To Clean Grille and Lens:

Disconnect the light lens and the bulb. Remover the center nut of the reflector and lower the unit.

CAUTION: The reflector and grille are separate units. Detach the light from the WHITE receptacle. You can clean the plastic parts with mild, soapy water (using dishwashing liquid) and dry them with a soft cloth. Do not use steel wool pads, scouring powders, or abrasive cloth.

To Clean Fan Assembly:

Disconnect the fan assembly (BLACK receptacle). To disconnect the motor plate:

  1. Identify the single tab on the motor plate next to the receptacles.
  2. Push out on the housing side as you push up near the motor plate tab.
  3. Alternatively, for the two above, insert a straight-blade screwdriver into the slot next to the tab and rotate the screwdriver.
  4. Carefully vacuum the fan, interior of the housing and the motor. DO NOT IMMERSE ELECTRICAL AND METAL PARTS IN WATER.
