Broan Allure Range Hood Manual

Broan offers a wide range of kitchen ventilation products, especially in North America. It provides products that give value for money and at the same time different modern styles. The Broan hoods are also easy to install at the bottom of cabinets which enables them to get rid of smoke and odor. The Broan hoods emit light cooktop lighting as well as excellent protection for all of the cabinets that surround it.

Prepare the location for the hood

The following are the steps on how you can prepare the location for your Broan hood.

1. Determine whether or not the hood will be positioned vertically at about 3 ¼ “x 10” and 7” round or horizontally for about 3 ¼ “x 10”. Run ductwork in between the hood location and roof/wall cap. To achieve optimum results, use a minimum number of transitions and elbows as possible.

2. Use the diagrams in the owner’s manual to guide you on how to place the ductwork properly and the electrical cutout on the wall or cabinet. Do not cut a duct access hole if your installation for the hood is non-ducted.

3. Get rid of the Teflon-coated bottom over from the hood and then set the cover and mounting screws at the sides.

4. The hood usually contains a damper/dump connector. Remove the damper and then set the connector on the side, together with the mounting screws and the bag that contains the bag.

5. Pry the top and the back wiring knockout and then install the electrical cable camp that is approved.

6. There is a light panel that is usually held in place using 2-8” screws and 2-8” screws. Remove it and then disconnect the light assembly wire harness. Specifically the white connector.

7. The Broan hoods also have air chutes. Remove the one in your unit which is held firmly in place using a screw. Ensure that as you carry out this step, and do not end up disconnecting any of the wires.

8. After removing the air chute, pry the baffle off as well.9. Reinstall the baffle after rotating it so the baffle tabs fit into the spots inside the air chute. You have to hear an audible click sound to know that you have installed it fully. In turn, this will shut off the airflow through the slots that are non-ducted at the top of the Broan hood.

10. Put the air chute back into its original position. Reconnect the wire harness and then replace the light panel. Note, however, that the wires should not be trapped in between the ort fin and the light panel.

11. Remove the appropriate duct knockouts from the top of the back of the Broan hood.

12. For horizontal discharge: Remove the plate that is in front of the horizontal discharge knockout. Discard the plate but after cutting it ties and lifting it out by pulling it towards you. Do not remove the metal strip that is secure in place with the use of two screws.

13. For the 3 ¼ “by 10” ducted discharge: Remove the hood from the damper flap and then attach the duct connector to the knockout opening using the screws that you removed previously (step 4 of ‘preparing the hood’). The damper pivot should be installed as near the back edge of the hood as possible.

14. For 14.7” round ducted discharge: Remove the duct plate that you had removed in step 1 under ‘prepare the hood’. Proceed to install a round damper that is about 7”. To ensure that you have properly installed the damper, its flap must not be able to open freely in the direction of the airflow. Note, however, to accommodate the off-center ductwork, install the duct connector about an inch on either side of the hood center or the 7” round duct plate which can also be installed on either side of the hood center as well. It is recommended to trim one end of the duct to clear the electrical cable camp, especially for the extreme off-center installations.

15. For the non-ducted Broan Hoods: To attach the hood to the blower wheel, you will need to have a performance ring. The following are the steps on how to install the ring:

  • Rock the blower wheel from side to side so that you can remove it. Then pull it off the motor using slight force.
  • Slide the ring on to the small diameter end of the blower wheel and then down to the bottom of the wheel.
  • Reinstall the wheel back to the motor. The tab on the wheel should fit inside one of the motor slots. The blower wheel should be locked in place, meaning you should push it down.
  • Lock the blower wheel in place.
  • The blower wheel should always be in the proper position. If it does not stay in place with the first trial, press its sections into place until it runs freely when the unit is turned on.

How to connect the wiring

  1. The hose wiring (120 VAC) should be connected to the Broan hood. To protect the cook top, you should place a piece of cardboard on it.
  2. The hood black wire should then be connected to the house black, the hood white wire to the house white and the green ground screw should be connected to the house ground. Ensure that the cable clamp is tightened securely onto the house wiring.

How to install the hood

  1. Hang the Broan hood from the mounting screws. Proceed to slide the hood for your unit towards the wall all the way until you notice that it is completely engaged inside the narrow end of the keyholes. Tighten the mounting screws until it is completely firm.
  2. Replace the bottom cover of the unit.
  3. The duct work should then be connected to the Broan hood. Make the joints as secure as possible and as air tight as it can get.
  4. The appropriate installation for this is the PAR 20, 50 W Maximum Halogen Bulbs or R16, 40 W Maximum incandescent Bulbs. These do not come with the unit during the purchase of the unit. It is important to note that the bulbs get hot after some time. To get further information, refer to the bulb packaging.
  5. Replace all the filters with brand new ones and then test for the proper installation.

How to Operate

Fan (4 button switches):

Push any of the four available buttons so as to select one of the four fan speeds. To change the speed of the fan, press another different button. Then push that same button in order to turn off the fan. The different fan speeds are indicated by the light that is above each button.

Lights:

When you press the on/off button, the lights will come on at their previously set level. Press the same button so as to turn the lights off. In order to increase the light levels on the fan, press the ‘100%’ button. Otherwise, press the ‘-’ button to reduce the level of light. There are usually three levels of light to select from.

Delay Off:

Press the delay button while the fan is still running so as to allow the fan to run for about 10 minutes and it should turn itself off afterwards.

Filter change indicator:

The light that is above the words filter should come on when it is time to clean your grease filters. The light should come on when checking on the non-duct filters as well. After replacing those filters with clean ones or with brand new ones, press the ‘filter’ button so as to turn off the indicator light.

Heat Sentry System:

The Broan range hoods are equipped with advanced heat sentry systems. The advanced versions of these systems are in charge of monitoring the temperature and adjusting the fan to the most appropriate setting.

1. If the fan is on, the Heat Sentry system will increase the fan setting each time you elevate the temperature. The Heat Sentry system continues to increase the fan setting whenever the temperatures keep rising. The settings will keep increasing until the temperature is reduced or at least stabilized. The Heat Sentry system fan setting is indicated by the flashing light above the fan button. This system then changes the fan to its initial setting once you have reduced the temperature.

2. The Heat Sentry system turns the fan on automatically at its highest possible speed each time the temperature is above normal whenever the fan is on or off. The light that is above the fan button ‘B’ flashes on and off whenever the Heat Sentry system is turned on. The fan then changes its settings before the Heat Sentry turns on but this is usually after the temperature has been lowered to normal.

Fuse: A fuse protects the hood control from being damaged by power surges. If the fuse is blown, the green fan-level indicators will only operate as they should when the fan switch is pressed. This however does not mean that the fan and lights will turn back on.

The characteristics: 5 by 20 ram, 10Amp, Fast-acting, 125V (rain).

The common manufacturer and part numbers are: Littlefuse, 217010; Bussmann, GMA10A; Wickmann, 1942100. Radio Shavk, Digikey (1-800-344-4539), and well known electronic supply stores usually have them in stock.

To be able to replace the fuse:

  1. At the service entrance, disconnect the power from there.
  2. Get rid of the filters, bottom panel, light wire harness and the air chute respectively.
  3. Remove the fuse and inspect it for any damages. If the fuse is not blown, you will need to perform additional diagnostics on it.
  4. Install the brand new fuse.
  5. Reinstall the air chute, the light wire harness, bottom panel and the filters in the exact order in which you found them.
  6. Turn the power to your unit back on and then check the operations for the control and the hood as well.
