Broan Nutone Fan Motor Replacement

Replacing a dead motor will help improve airflow. It is possible to fix your Broan bath fan without having to replace the entire unit. A fan dead motor can easily be replaced without having to tear the ceiling out at all or replacing the whole thing. The venting system can be improved and roof rot can be prevented by running the vent through the roof.

How to Replace a Broan Fan Dead Motor

Tools:

A roof vent cap

Aluminum duct

Two 6” hose clamps

Roofing cement

1-1/4” roofing nails

½” sheet metal screws

Remove the Grille

Pull the grille down and then pinch the springs to release them from the housing. Locate the model number by vacuuming the dust that may have settled on it.

If the Broan bathroom fans in your bathroom are dead, you do not need to get rid of the entire unit. It does not matter how old your Broan Nutone fan is, there is a replacement for its motor. As much as the new motor costs the same as that of a brand new fan, purchasing a bathroom vent fan motor and replacing the old one will save you both time and the trouble that it would take to replace the entire fan. You do not require cutting into the ceiling, crawling around your attic or getting up on your roof to be able to fix it. Also, this should take less than an hour.

First, you need to get the fan’s model number. Then remove the fan grille. Afterwards, vacuum the dust to find the number on a label or any number stamped on the fan’s housing. Do not rush to order a new motor until you have gotten rid of the old one. You might need other parts later on.

Bath fans are usually in various designs. However, Broan fan motor replacement requires the same basic steps regardless of the brand or model you own. Turn the power off to the fan at the main breaker panel. Unplug the fan and then pry off the motor plate. Some of these motor plates are released by pressing or prying on the side of the fan housing. Other plates are secured with a screw or two.

Before removing the motor from the plate, you are required to remove the blower from the motor’s shaft. Old metal blowers are fastened with a screw. Plastic blowers on the other hand are usually not fastened at all. These simply slide off the shaft. Whichever one is in your fan, it still requires some hard prying and pulling to be removed. If by any chance you damage the blower while removing it, there is no need to worry. The replacement is readily available and at a little cost too. To install the new motor, reverse the removal process.

Run duct outside to prevent roof rot

Locate and cut the vent hole. Cut out a circle of shingles that are about 4-1/4” centered on the marker screw. Drill a starter hole for your jigsaw blade and then proceed to cut out the roof’s sheathing.

If there is an attic above the bathroom, you may take a shortcut in installing the unit: Instead of running the duct through the roof, you can opt to end the duct inside the attic. The result of this is that the fan may fill the attic with moist air. That in turn feeds moisture to the wood and causes wood rot. During winter, frost usually forms in the attic and as it melts, the water can damage the ceilings below it.

If you do not have a cap on your roof, there are high chances that your Broan bath fan is vented into the attic. Running a new duct up through the roof is not as difficult as it may seem. However, you will be required to work in the attic and on the roof as well. Since you are doing all that work anyway, it is recommended to consider replacing the entire fan unit.

During the summer, the attic can get dangerously hot. This is why you need to work on a cool day. Always wear protective gear such as a dust mask and eye protection goggles. Bring a trouble light and a large scrap of plywood to help you as a work platform. There is a way that you can do the job with only two trips to the attic: On your first trip, ensure that the exhaust port diameter is made and then pick a spot that is near the fan where you want the duct to exit the roof. Drive a screw up through the roof so you can find the location from outside your house. Then head for a home center.
