Delta Shower Faucet Scald Guard Adjustment

Most of the current Delta combination tub and shower series faucets come equipped with shower scald guards. These shower scald guards are also known as “rotational limit stops” and they usually help to keep the water at a temperature that is safe for everyday showers. The Delta scald guard is designed in such a way that it allows you to increase or decrease the maximum water temperature at the faucet without having to adjust the water heater thermostat or disconnect your home’s water supply. It is recommended to determine which type of Delta faucet you have installed in your shower so that you can be able to make adjustments correctly.

Tools

Hex key set

A Phillips screwdriver

How to Adjust an Anti Scald Valve Shower

1.
Remove the Faucet Handle

Locate the set screw opening that is along the side of the Delta faucet handle if you have a Delta 13 or a 14 series. Rotate the screw counterclockwise using a hex key until you can pull the handle from the faucet.

2.
Remove the Faucet Cartridge

Grasp the sleeve that is located around the Delta faucet cartridge and then pull it off the faucet to expose the cartridge body.

3.
Remove the Plastic Disk from the Faucet

Pry the small plastic disk off the Delta faucet stem. This should expose the Delta shower faucet, and scald guard. Note also, the writing that is on the face of the Delta shower faucet scald guard is used to indicate the direction in which the guard should move, to be able to adjust the water temperature.

4.
Remove and Adjust the Delta Shower Scald Guard

Your fingers grab the Delta shower scald guard and then pull it from the faucet cartridge. You can then turn the Delta shower scald guard counterclockwise to help increase the water temperature in your faucet. To reduce the water temperature, rotate it clockwise.

5.
Replace the Delta Scald Guard

You can insert the shower faucet scald guard inside the cartridge. Ensure that the notches that are on the scald guard fit correctly between the slots that are contained in the faucet cartridge. Every single one of those slots contains about 40 to 160 differences in the water temperature. However, the range of the slots is usually limited to restricting the placement of the Delta shower faucet scald guard. The cartridge is usually designed in such a way that it does not allow you to rotate the guard too far in either of the directions.

6.
Replace the Plastic Disk in the Faucet

Proceed to slide the plastic disk onto the Delta shower faucet stem. Push the sleeve over the Delta faucet cartridge. Replace the handle of the faucet and then place the set screw in place and tighten it.

How to Adjust the Delta 17 Series Shower Faucets

1. Pull the temperature knob cover over the Delta shower faucet handle. Use both hands to grab the temperature knob cover to remove it. This should expose the temperature knob screw. The temperature knob is usually positioned on top of the Delta faucet handle. Wiggle the temperature knob cover back and forth and up and down and then pull it right off the handle if it appears to be stuck.

2.
Remove the Delta shower faucet temperature knob. Remove the temperature knob screw to be able to release the temperature knob completely off of the Delta faucet handle assembly. Remove the knob to expose the black plastic from the Delta shower faucet scald guard.

3. Remove and adjust the Delta shower faucet scald guard. Use your hands to get a grip on the scald guard and then pull it out from the faucet handle assembly. To increase the temperature of the water, rotate the scald guard in a counterclockwise manner. To decrease the water temperature, rotate it in a clockwise manner. The notches that are on the scald guard represent a water temperature difference of 40 to 60 each.

4. Replace the Delta shower faucet scald guard and temperature knob. Place the plastic guard back into the Delta faucet handle assembly. Replace some of the faucet pieces such that; the temperature knob, the screw on the knob and the temperature knob cover. Tighten the knob screw but only enough to keep the temperature knob from wobbling or moving back and forth. Be careful not to over-tighten the knob screw because it can damage the knob and faucet.

How to Adjust the Delta 17T Series Faucets

1. Remove the Delta Faucet Knob Cover. Remove the decorative knob cover that is located at the top of the faucet handle using your fingertips to expose the temperature knob screw.

2.
Remove the Delta Temperature Knob from the faucet. Remove the screw that has been used to secure and attach the Delta faucet temperature knob to the faucet handle assembly. Pull the temperature knob to remove it from the handle assembly.

3. Adjust the temperature knob. To increase the water temperature, you can rotate the temperature knob in a clockwise manner. To decrease the water temperature, turn the knob in a counterclockwise manner. The notches that are on the scald guard represent a water temperature difference of 40 to 60 each.

4. Replace the Delta faucet knob and the decorative cover. Push the temperature knob onto the faucet handle assembly to put it back into its original position. Secure the knob using the screw that you earlier removed. Put the decorative knob cover back onto the Delta shower faucet handle.

Anti-Scald Valves

The Delta shower anti-scald valves, also known as tempering valves and mixing valves, are the mechanisms that mix cold water with outgoing hot water to prevent the hot water that leaves a fixture from scalding a person.
