The Fasco draft inducer is located inside the gas furnace and expels combustion gas out of the furnace and vents. It is one of the most critical elements inside a furnace. It provides a steady and even flows of oxygen to the burners once it starts running during a heating cycle.
Draft Inducer Motor Replacement
How to replace a draft inducer motor:
Tools
3/8” drive ratchet
¼” socket
6-in-1 screwdriver
1/8” hex key
A penetrating lubricant
Step 1
Stop the flow of gas to your furnace as well as the power supply. You can do this by simply flipping the service switch off.
If there is no service switch near the furnace, cut off the power supply to the unit right at the breaker box.
Step 2
Grab the handle by the front panel that is labeled “lift” and push it up to release the panel. Proceed to place it at the side.
Step 3
The draft inducer motor is located on the upper left area of the furnace’s chamber. Unplug the connector to the motor.
Step 4
Remove the set of screws that hold the shield plate to the Fasco draft inducer assembly using a ¼” socket or a flathead screwdriver. Remove the plate off the unit and set it at the side.
Step 5
Remove the three mounting bolts securing the Fasco draft inducer motor with a ¼” socket. Remove the Fasco draft inducer motor assembly from the furnace by supporting it from the bottom area.
Step 6
Carefully remove the circular clip from the cooling fan of the unit using a flathead screwdriver. Do not apply too much pressure on the fan itself, since it is made of delicate material or plastic and it might break under too much force.
Step 7
Remove the cooling fan from the driveshaft of the motor.
Step 8
Flip the assembly over to the other side. Use a 1/8” hex key to help loosen the set screw that connects the blower fan to the driveshaft. Penetrating oil will also help loosen it.
Step 9
Remove the Fasco blower fan from the driveshaft on the motor. Apply a little bit more pressure and wiggle the Fasco blower fan to remove it.
Step 10
Flip the assembly over and then remove the three bolts that have been used to secure the motor bracket to the motor plate using a ¼” socket. After removing the bolts, flip over the assembly and remove the Fasco motor bracket.
Once you have removed it, note the motor’s ground wire which has been used to connect the motor to one of the bracket bolts. Reconnect it during the reassembling process.
Step 11
Use a socket that is about ¼” to remove the two bolts on the motor plate. Remove the Fasco motor bracket.
Step 12
While installing the Fasco blower fan motor, ensure that the set screw on the blower fan is lined up with the flat edge of the driveshaft of the motor.
