Removing and Installing an American Standard Faucet Cartridge

In this guide, learn how to remove and install an American Standard faucet cartridge.

Identify the type of faucet you have by simply looking for the brand name. This should be either printed or deeply engraved on the faucet.

You can also measure the number of splines that your cartridge has, as well as its length, to identify the cartridge type.

How to remove a cartridge

Tools

  • A knife
  • Allen wrench
  • Adjustable wrench
  • A small screwdriver

For faucets with decorative caps:

1. Pry the cap off with the flat end of a knife.

2. Using a screwdriver and turning counterclockwise, remove the screw underneath.

3. Remove the handle—you will see a nut. Using an adjustable wrench, turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen it, and then using your hands, remove it from the faucet.

4. Pull out the stem of the cartridge. Set it aside. Using a screwdriver, remove the ring and the spring.

How to install the new cartridge

Put the new spring and the ring back to their previous position. Holding the stem, put back the cartridge and the nut, and fasten the nut clockwise using an adjustable wrench. Screw the handle back on.

For a curved handle faucet:

1. Look for the set screw anywhere around the handle, which will most likely be underneath the handle. Use an Allen wrench to unscrew it counterclockwise.

2. Lift off the handle and you will see a valve nut. Loosen it with an adjustable wrench, and pry it off with your hands. Lift the cartridge out.

How to install the new cartridge

Put the new cartridge back carefully. Fasten the valve nut and screw the handle back to its previous position.

For a single-handle faucet:

1. Lift the handle and using an Allen wrench, remove the screw underneath. Set it aside.

2. Using an adjustable wrench, twist the nut counterclockwise and remove it. Using your hand, lift off the cam, followed by the packing and ball valve. Use a small screwdriver to remove the seats, springs and cartridge.

How to install the new cartridge

Put back the cartridge, the seats, and springs, followed by the packing and ball valves and the cam. Re-install the nut back to the previous position and fasten it. Put back the faucet handle and fasten the screws back on.

If you want to replace your cartridge you can take the parts (the cartridge, ring, and the spring) with you, to ensure you get the exact sizes of materials you are looking for.
