Removing and Replacing an American Standard Toilet Tank

The American Standard toilet tanks could wear down and have cracks and leaks over time. The toilet tanks are often sold separately, and you would need to remove the old tank to install a new one. Here are the steps to remove the American Standard toilet tank:

Tools

Wrench

A pair of pliers

Screwdriver

Towel

Toilet Tank

Level

How to remove an old American Standard tank

1.
Turn off the main water supply to the toilet.

There is a metal valve on the wall with a hose that connects to the toilet tank—turn the handle of the metal counterclockwise until it’s off.

2.
Drain the tank.

To drain the water from the tank, hold the flush lever down. Remove the lid and set aside. Flush the water from the toilet and drain it by holding the lever that is on the side of the toilet tank. Do not let go of the lever until all the water has been drained. If there is any leftover water that is not drained, you can use a sponge to soak it up.

3.
Detach the hose from the bottom of the tank.

The supply hose is made of plastic or metallic material. You can unscrew the hose from the tank using your hand or with a pair of pliers.

4.
Use a screwdriver to loosen the bolts.

Grip the nuts that are on the outside of the tank with a pair of pliers. On the inside of the tank, turn the bolt heads counterclockwise. The nuts should come loose underneath the bolts. Then pull the bolts from the tank completely. Remove all the bolts from the tank.

5.
Lift off the tank.

Use both hands to lift the toilet tank off the toilet. In order to not damage the bowl or drop the flush valves inside the tank, make sure to lift it up directly.

How to install a new American Standard toilet tank

1.
Buy a tank that fits your toilet bowl’s gasket.

Use a tape measure to measure the size of your toilet bowl, and keep note of the color as well, so you can buy the same toilet tank.

2.
Push the gasket onto the bottom of the tank.

A toilet-to-bowl ring comes with the toilet tank during purchase. Access the bottom of the tank by laying it on its side. Form a tight seal by pushing the gasket onto the hole that is at the bottom of the toilet tank.

3.
Insert the rubber washers.

The rubber washers are inserted on each of the bolts that are on the tank. Ensure that these washers are tight against the top of the bolts to prevent leaks.

4.
Set the tank on the toilet bowl.

Make sure that the holes line up with one another. Set the tank at the top of the toilet bowl. The gasket should also line up with the large hole that is at the back of the bowl. Keep holding the toilet tank in place to prevent it from slipping or falling.

5.
Place the bolts and secure them.

Put the bolts inside the tank through the holes that are the bottom of the tank. Press the rubber washer on the bolts tightly to form a seal at the bottom of the tank. Continue supporting the toilet bowl even as you do this in order to prevent it from slipping and or damaging the toilet bowl.

6.
Tighten the nuts.

Fasten the nuts onto the sides of the tank to hold it in place. Screw all the nuts that are connected to the bolts until they are tight. You can use a pair of pliers to further tighten the nuts. Make sure that the tank is leveled.

How to fill the American Standard toilet tank

1.
Clip the refill hose.

The hose is the plastic tube that is typically attached to the top of the flash mechanism and the inside of the tank. Clip it onto the flush valve in the middle or on the side of your toilet tank. Use your toilet manual to know where to attach the refill hose.

2.
Screw the supply hose.

At the bottom of the toilet tank, screw the hose on the tank threading clockwise. Tighten it gently..

3.
Turn on the main water supply to the tank.

Rotate the valve clockwise to let water into your tank. The water should start to rise and everything should function properly. Check for leaks around the supply hose, on the bolts and at the gasket. If there are no leaks, put the toilet lid back on.
