The spark plug converts the pulsating high voltage AC current from the ignition system to a low voltage DC current of between 4 and 20 thousandths of an ampere that is used to ignite vaporized fuel in the combustion chamber. The coil assembly is designed to be mounted on the valve cover (or its equivalent) for access by the distributor shaft.

The ignition coil is one of the major ignition components in the distributor assembly. If you suspect you have a bad ignition coil, check for spark on the orange wire at the control unit first. If there is none, then replace this part.
