Familiarize Yourself

It is important to familiarize yourself with the parts of garbage disposal before you begin to do anything. Understanding all the parts of the American Garbage Disposal and how they are supposed to function is really important to know ahead of doing the work.

Disconnect the pipes

Disconnect the circuit breaker first before you disconnect the drain pipes.

Also, remember to put a bucket under the P-trap to avoid any garbage spilling under your sink. Proceed to remove the sink strainer and any excess putty.

Re-apply the putty

Around the flange surface, apply the plumber’s putty and press it into place. Set the flange on the sink and make sure it sits on a towel to keep it from moving.

Install the ring (snap ring)

Stack the fiber gasket under the sink, followed by the backup flange and the mounting ring. Then slide them on the underside of the flange. Go ahead and install the snap ring by pulling it open and snapping back into place. Fasten the screws around it using a screwdriver to make sure that they are firmly against the backup flange. Clean around the area to get rid of the excess putty.

Connect the dishwasher drain

Use a hammer to knock out the drain plug and remove it from the inlet on the disposal, so that you can connect the dishwasher.

Remove the cover plate

There is a wire cover plate. Remove it and connect the electrical cord by matching the wire colors. Push the wire back into the cover plate and reattach the plate back into its original position.

Connect the drain

Insert the gasket in the discharge outlet and then attach the discharge tube with the flange and bolts to connect the drain in the right manner. Aligning the three tabs with the mountain ring, hang the disposal. Turn and lock the tabs over the ridges using the provided wrench. proceed to connect the dishwasher drain. Ensure to check that the discharge pipe is correctly lined up properly with the drainpipes to avoid any leakage.

Test

Test to see that the disposal has been installed properly. To do this, place the stopper into the sink drain and fill the sink with water. Check if there is any sign of leakage. If there is none, plug in the disposal and turn on the power.

Note: Prop up the garbage disposal unit with a firm object since it can be quite heavy to hold it with one hand while working with the other
