The Vacuum Switch is a single pole, double break (SPDT), normally open switch with vacuum pipe connection designed to be used on conventional gas or oil fired units. It is used to either switch off the main burner during furnace evacuation or to connect the heat anticipators to the burners while they are not being fired. The Vacuum Switch prevents ignition of pilot gases while the burner is in "on" position and thus reduces carbon monoxide emission.

The vacuum switch for Ruud heat pump systems automatically shuts off the furnace blower if a certain vacuum level does not exist in the heat pump evaporator coil. This switch is activated by two separate lines from the refrigerant metering device on the side of the compressor.
